Pre festival reflections… by Sathpal Singh

January 24, 2021 By Karl Smith

For me, Sundays are for reflection. Reflecting on the week gone by: the positives, the learnings and the must-do betters (there’s plenty of those!)

As part of this process I revisited an old conversation that Myles Hopkins, a fellow Trustee and I had way back in Nov 2020 in the early days of our work on The Agile20Reflect Festival

A lot has happened since! The festival for me is about many things but at it’s heart: learning, community, building lasting friendships and emergence. I’m reminded of the original festival’s principles we set out: https://agile20reflect.org/support-us/agile20reflect-principles/

Myles and I seemed to cover a great deal of ground as we reflected on my journey, my early brushes with XP, how we see Agile now and what would I say to new entrants into this world. There is a wealth of sessions from Agile SMEs from across the globe in the festival program which will do a deeper-dive into many of the topics we touched on here and of which, we merely scratched the surface.   The festival presents a unique learning opportunity within the Agile space like never before.

Peruse the program (https://agile20reflect.org/festival/photo/) and find the events and topics that speak to you.  Are you interested in the history of how the manifesto was authored?   Perhaps it’s patterns for successful Agile transformations you seek?  How to create more of a learning organisation?  Maybe you wish to deepen your knowledge on frameworks such as SAFe, Scrum and LeSS and methods like Kanban and meet other practitioners from around the world?  Alternatively you want to hear more about Agile leadership,  Business Agility or how to become a great Product Manager?  Whether it’s the origins, current application and adoption or the debate around the future,  there’s so much to choose from in this packed month long program!   Give yourself time to figure out how to best use this resource while reflecting on your journey to-date and how you might like to see it evolve.   At Agile20Reflect we are intrigued by emergence and what may come next.  Join in, celebrate and contemplate the future or better still…#SHAPE it!

Shout outs in the interview for Kent Beck for his seminal text, Extreme Programming explained, Embrace Change, Evan Leybourn Co-founder of the Business Agility Institute, the wonderful Douglas Squirrel and Jeffrey Fredrick authors of one of my favourite books of 2020, Agile Conversations and co-author of the Agile manifesto and a Patron of the festival Alistair Cockburn
