Agile20Reflect Mini Festival #4 with Neil Walker and Roy Marriott

February 25, 2021 By Anurag Shrivastava

********************

Agenda for Mini Festival #3:
6:00pm – ⌚ Arrivals and pre-networking

6:05pm – 🎤 “The future is now – enter the age of Agility” talk by: Neil Walker

7:45pm – Q&A

7:00pm – 🎤 “Communicating the Agile Mindset through Coaching” talk by Roy Marriott

7:40pm – Q&A

7:55pm – Wrap-up

8:00 – End 🛏️

********************

About the talk by Neil Walker
Agile began first as a better means to run a small team, later numerous networked teams. More recently, Agile has established itself as an enhanced way of running entire organisations. The upshot of this evolution, Agile has enabled Agility.
Agility is a worthy aspiration. As we face an increasingly unpredictable, uncertain, and urgent world, such ambiguity wreaks havoc. Leaders find themselves on an economic roller coaster, being hurled around on an incessant fast-moving change and disruption ride. One that will certainly not end where it started.
No longer can leaders stay in their seats until the ride is over. Such apathetic action is prone to result in an epic crash; for everyone riding along with the leader. Does Agile enabled Agility look like the rescuer. Probably, as long as it is not left to the last second. That very idea may strike fear into the heart of even the most extreme laggard.
We have a lot riding on Agile enabled Agility. Thankfully, the very concept of Agile has evolved since 2001. Over the course of this interactive session, we’ll embark on a thrill-seeking Agility ride. Hopefully one that won’t have you feeling like you’re somersaulting out of your seat.

About the Speaker:
Neil is an Agile leadership coach, trainer, and consultant. An early Agile advocate, starting his Agile journey in 1992, resulting in 3 decades of hands-on Agile delivery, advisory, and coaching experience. He’s applied a range of Lean-Agile practices and complementing competencies to transform organisations, working across a variety of industries (including finance, government, services, retail, logistics). From 2001, he began experimenting with using Agile practices and principles beyond software and product development, extending this further in 2005, when he led and facilitated an inaugural “Business Agility” transformation with a global System Integrator and consulting firm. Today, he is a Senior Partner with Catalyst Consulting, a 25-year old boutique Lean-Agile consulting firm. Co-founder and Vice President of the UK chapter of the Business Agility Institute. Furthermore, a volunteer Agile transformation coach with UK charity, RNLI.

********************

About the talk by Roy Marriott
We can coach in different ways, and some ways are better than others at communicating the Agile mindset. In this workshop we’ll look at a “Solution Focused” coaching approach that fits beautifully with the Agile Manifesto values and principles. We’ll explore what it is, how it fits with Agile, how it communicates the Agile Mindset – and most importantly, experience it in action

About the Speaker:
Roy Marriott is an Agile Leadership Coach based in the UK. He helps leaders and team deliver better results more quickly, in ways that are more enjoyable and more engaging. Roy started coaching professionally in 1993, and has been training leaders, managers and coaches since 2005. He has developed a number of coaching models that are in use around the world, focused on applications such as Change without Resistance, Feedback, Psychological Safety, Negotiation, Delegation, Time Mastery and Resilience. Roy has coached and trained leaders and coaches from organisations such as ARM, Bain Consulting, Bupa, Cambridge University, DisplayLink, European Space Agency, European Patent Office, IdeaGen, Microsoft, NHS, Nestle, National Australia Bank, VW and many more.

7:45pm – Q&A

About the talk by Shalini Thirunilathil
“Do you follow agile and still feel something is missing?“ Need some useful tips? Join the talk – “Embracing an agile mindset”.
Shalini will take you through the journey of agile evolution and the key challenges in adopting agile. As part of the presentation, she will be sharing useful tips for both scrum teams and leadership teams to embrace an agile mindset, considering key aspects such as personal characteristics, behaviours, and emotional intelligence.

About the Speaker:
My first entry into the technical market was as a Graduate Software Developer at Civica. I gradually worked my way up the ladder with established firms like Proactis, Springer Nature, SAP, IBM, O2, LexisNexis and IRIS playing diverse roles as Junior Tester, Senior Tester, Test Lead, Test Manager, Software Engineering Manager and Scrum Master.
13 years of IT industry experience working with amazing individuals and teams churned my personality to who I am today making me the finalist for Computing Women in IT excellence awards for the Role model of the year in IT category 2019.

********************

About the talk by Charles-Louis de Maere
Twenty years after the “Manifesto for Agile Software Development” was written, let’s take a look at how this has changed the world.
And what better way to observe that than to come with our own stories, our own experiences, and share them back for the world to hear?

How are the values and principles reflected in the way we interact with one another? And in a world hit by the COVID-pandemic with lockdowns all over the place, what would be your take on “The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.”?

About the Speaker:
Charles-Louis loves bringing people together and seeing what happens when they “tune in” together. He started his journey towards agility (or sense-making) around 2009, and worked in different contexts and companies which provided him with perspectives to make sense of the work we do. He learned Scrum by doing, as a Scrum Master together with his team. They started from the guide and discovered the beauty of Inspect and Adapt.
As a visual facilitator, Charles-Louis loves making the hidden things visible, using pictorial language to uncover our understanding of things. Stories are another option for bringing sensitive topics to the surface, and he has recently started to explore this topic through his self-development practice.

********************

About the “Current State of Agile” talk by Alkesh Shah
This talk in series of talks for the 20th Anniversary of the Manifesto takes a closer look at the current state of Agile.
Together we look at why it has taken so long for organisations to adopt agile, what the key issues have been and how those that have are now finding a need to scale and experiencing new difficulties.
As with all of Alkesh’s talks, there are practical steps given that help understand the current state in your own organisations and also consider the rational for adoption for those of you yet to venture on this journey.
Alkesh demonstrates the broader aspects of agile as a mindset and drives a common sense approach to transformation.

About the Speaker:
Alkesh is a Principal Consultant at PA Consulting, has been an IBM Agile Thought Leader, Enterprise Agile Coach and trainer. He backs his 40 + years of IT business experience with a breadth of academic qualifications from an MBA, BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis, Certified Scrum Master Professional and Product Owner as well as a SAFe SPC, IC Agile Enterprise Coach and Team Facilitator amongst his list of accreditations.

About the “Have we become “All talk – no Agile”?” talk by Gwen Hughes
What better time and place to reflect than the ‘Agile Reflect 20 Festival’ – and during this session, we’ll be doing just that as we take a long hard look at ourselves, and our agility.
With the popularity of Agile having skyrocketed since it’s humble beginnings in 2001, have we all become “All talk and no Agile”? Are we still obeying by the Agile Principles, or have we fallen into bad habits? Has Agile become a goal we hope to one day achieve, rather than a set of values to abide by every day?
Over the course of this interactive session, we’ll take a look at how far Agile has come in the last 20 years. We’ll put ourselves under the microscope to find out whether or not we really are as Agile as we say we are. And if we really aren’t that Agile – what does that mean?

About the Speaker:
Gwen is an Agile Team Lead for Zappi – a ground-breaking technology company that’s changing the market research industry. Despite starting her career as a Software Developer, her passions very much revolve around the people she works with as she strives to bring the Agile Philosophy into their everyday working lives.
When she’s not wearing her ‘Agile Team Lead’ hat – Gwen is (usually) pretty hard to track down as she travels the world, exploring new countries and learning from their cultures. If you come across Gwen and want to break the ice – ask her about how she even uses her Agile skills to plan holidays!!

Agile20Reflect Mini Festival #1 with Russ Lewis, Nigel Thurlow & Mark Buchan

February 4, 2021 By Anurag Shrivastava

Agile Xpertise are pleased to present to you our 1st Mini Festival event of February, dedicated to celebrating Agile and 20 Years of the Manifesto.

This is the first time we are doing 4 back to back events, and the themes we will be covering are:

1. The history of Agile
2. The current state of Agile
3. The Future of Agile

********************

Agenda for Mini Festival #1:
6:00pm – ⌚ Arrivals and pre-networking

6:05pm – 🎤 “Changing Management’s Behaviour” panel discussion with Russ Lewis & Nigel Thurlow

7:45pm – Q&A

7:00pm – 🎤 “The future of Agile: Quantum Agile.” talk by: Mark Buchan

7:40pm – Q&A

7:55pm – Wrap-up

8:00 – End 🛏️

********************

About the discussion with Russ Lewis & Nigel Thurlow
In this panel discussion, enterprise executive coach Russ Lewis and flow systems expert Nigel Thurlow discuss the need to transform management.
Agile has revolutionised the ways teams do their work, but transformation initiatives fizzle-out when they meet the “Guardians of the Organisation” because only management can improve management. Executive coaching is too expensive given the number of managers, so the job is picked-up by agile coaches as they see the opportunity. But is it their job? Is it what management and sponsors expect?

We invite managers, sponsors, and agile coaches to participate in our research survey. The “impact of agile coaching on management” survey is running throughout the festival, here: http://agilecoachingmanagers.com/

About the Speakers:
Russ Lewis is a Digital Transformation Lead and Enterprise Agile Coach for large companies such as banking, online gaming, travel, and hotel booking sectors. You won’t find these on his resume, but he’s performed IT turnarounds and transformation rescues as Interim CTO and management consultant.
As technical instructor and course author, he travelled the world and was regularly hired to consult for the organizations he taught.

Nigel Thurlow is the creator of the award-winning Scrum the Toyota Way
training course, and the co-creator of The Flow System.
He previously served as the first ever Chief of Agile at a global Toyota
company, leading Lean and Agile practices at Toyota Connected. He also led many digital and organizational transformation initiatives while at Toyota and is a recognized expert in the Toyota Production System, the Toyota Way, and various Agile approaches.

********************

About the talk by Mark Buchan
Since the founding of the Agile Manifesto 20 years ago much focus has been given to the first of the 4 values espoused in the manifesto: Individuals and interactions over processes and tools. However what had emerged and evolved over the last 20 years in many quarters has been a complete contradiction to this principle with an over-emphasis on processes and tools. In this talk Mark will be discussing his vision for the future of agile and where it needs to go in order to reclaim its visionary birthright and to be more successful in its application in organisations. Leaning on the principle of quantum physics and using scientific developments over the last 20 years, Mark describes how practitioners of agile at all levels of the organisation, especially management, can evolve their practice and thinking for the greater beneficence of their organisations.

About the Speaker:
Mark Buchan was one of the first Agile coaches in the UK and has worked with public and private sector organisations of all sizes since 2003. He has been called into organisations to troubleshoot Transformations that have gone off the rails. He is author of “Leaders, it’s not how you finish … it’s how you start! A radical, new strategy for leading successful Agile Transformations revealed”. He is currently writing his next book which is an expose of the agile “industry” and what organisations need to do in order to be truly agile and to thrive in the 21st century without hiring expensive consulting houses to do so!
